Aoi Mukai (
Aoi is targeted by several organizations and the ninjas Yodaka, Hibari and Umineko have been assigned to be her bodyguards. Aoi is classified as the most challenging wards to protect.
Etymology[]
- Aoi's surname Mukai comes from the characters (
向 , mu) means "yonder/facing/confront/approach" and (日 , kai) means "day/sun".
Appearance[]
Aoi is a teenage girl with fair skin and yellow eyes. Her hair is blond and styles in a bob cut with straight bangs. On the left side of her hair is a red hairping with a red ribbon tied in a bow.
Personality[]
Aoi is a kind and cheerful person, who is also clumsy, often getting into accidents even when it seems impossible to do so. She is very headstrong and not afraid to stand up for what's right, no matter the opposition.[2]
Background[]
Aoi is at the center of a lot of privilege and wealth, with no other family it makes her a prime target for people of the underworld. She's lived most of her life with ninja's infiltrating the people around her to ensure her safety, which has gotten to a point where she feels like her life is too convenient, prompting her to want to escape from normality. [3]
Plot[]
Aoi is first seen arriving at school and immediately falling out of her car, dropping everything. Yodaka returns something she dropped and she cheerfully thanks him. In class, Hibari and Umineko talk to her and check if she's okay after her fall. When it's time to leave for the entrance ceremony, she heads to the toilet and rejects Hibari's offer to come with her. This is because she was actually planning on ditching the ceremony, and as she leaves to explore she notices Yodaka in the classroom and tells him what she's doing. As she walks around, she ends up tripping on her shoelaces and falling into a trashcan, which Yodaka help her sort out. They walk together and Yodaka tells her about his nerves, prompting her to laugh and then tell him how she feels that her life seems too convenient. She ends up bumping into Shun Nakamura who takes their names and tells them to head to the ceremony. She walks away as the two end up fighting in the background. At the end of school, Hibari asks to walk home together which she rejects and she instead runs to meet Yodaka and asks him to be her friend.[3]
The next day, she arrives at school after falling into a bush and wearing the wrong shoes. After making her own lunch for the day, she wanted to eat with someone and invited Yodaka to join her. She went to get drinks before joining him for lunch, but on her return she found him being ganged up on by older students. She confronts them to get them to stop and compliments Yodaka when they try to insult him, finding him fun and not embarrassing. They end up knocking her lunch across the floor and Yodaka retaliates. After the scuffle, she checks up on Yodaka and tries to eat her lunch off the floor. She instantly and casually accepts Yodaka's answer to being her friend and they ponder what to do with the food.[2]
Aoi meets Yodaka in class and tells him how she's bringing him to karaoke with her and some other classmates. On the way there, she talks with other classmates but smiles back at Yodaka. At the karaoke place, she heads to the toilets and Hibari joins her. Whilst she's in there, Hibari and Yodaka take out some kidnappers after her and she spots Yodaka as she exits. She asks if he's enjoying it and he asks why she invited him and she says that she'd be lonely without him. As they walk back to the room, Umineko distracts her as Yodaka takes out the last enemy who was sneaking up from behind. As Yodaka shakes his maracas to cover the noise, she teases him.[1]
Aoi gets excited about joining a club for a trial period and brings Yodaka along with her. They end up seeing Miyake being hazed by other members of the soccer club, and she decides to join it so she can challenge them to a match, bringing Yodaka with her. During the match, she taunts the upperclassmen and they respond with an aggressive tackle on her. She tells Yodaka how she's okay and doesn't want to lose to people who are stuck up, motivating Yodaka. They end up winning the match and celebrate together, she and Yodaka then quit the club at the end of the day.[4]

Yodaka: Yodaka is the first friend Aoi makes at school, having bonded over their personal worries. He was the first person she told about how she feels about her life.
Hibari: Hibari's mission is to become Aoi's best friend, however her attempts to get close to her often end in Hibari rejecting them.
Umineko: Umineko's mission is to become Aoi's boyfriend, however is overshadowed by her friendship with Yodaka instead.
