- The Nightjar refers to said animal.
Fake Name[]
- Yodaka's fake surname is Nozuki comes from the characters (
野 , no) means "plains/field/rustic" and (月 , zuki) means "month/moon".
Appearance[]
Yodaka has middle-long purple hair and yellow eyes. He can be seen wearing a grey mask and a overall grey outfit when undercover. Most of the time he is seen in his school uniform. Yodoka also always wears a small ship on his ear to talk with Number Nine.
Personality[]
Yodaka is more of a shy person who struggles to talk to other people, finding social interactions very awkward. He avoids most interactions and large groups of people as a result. He fears disappointing friends, so he avoid befriending others despite desiring them. He later learns that his fear has robbed him of experiencing actual friendships and takes a step forward through befriending Aoi. [2]
Background[]
Yodaka joined The Roost, the center that trains Ninja, while being a Civilian and skipped through all the grades to graduation. He became the youngest graduate in history and gained all the attention of operators, not only for his skill, but his surprising lack of a ninja heritage.[3] Due to his lack of a ninja family, it meant no one would object to him going on dangerous missions, so he was often sent on them with no regard. This led to Yodaka being only focused on fights, without any care to his own safety, since no one cared about him, then it was fine for him to risk his life and just fight.[4] Yodaka ended up being passed around to several operators, until he was with Number Nine. Number Nine began talking to Yodaka constantly to make sure he doesn't become too reckless and hurt himself, and to help him work with other people.[5]
Plot[]
Yodaka is first seen taking out some criminals who had kidnapped a politician. His handler tells him he'll need to wait 5 minutes to hand him to the recovery team. This worries him, as the man starts trying to talk to him. This causes Yodaka to use a stealth retreat by distracting the man and escaping. He tells his handler how even just 5 minutes alone with a stranger is too awkward for him.[6]
The next day, Yodaka heads to a high school for his next mission, apologizing for the day before. He's told to bodyguard a high school girl for the foreseeable future, which freaks him out immensely as he is awful at talking to girls. When Aoi Mukai drops her things, Yodaka picks one of them. His handler insists that he return the item to her, and to his dismay, he very timidly returns it to her. This leads to Aoi greeting and thanking him, which reinvigorates his confidence. Later on, he's told that other ninja are present at the school for the same mission, and Yodaka mentions how he could pick them out from the crowd earlier due to their intense eyes. He's told the details of the mission's secrecy, and he gets worried about the pressure put on him to protect Aoi, being the last line of defense. He is introduced to Hibari and Umineko and gets jealous that Aoi gets guaranteed friends.
When the class leaves for the entrance ceremony, he stays in class panicking about hundreds of people staring at him in there. Aoi then finds him and tells him that she's ditching the ceremony to explore the school. This leads to him being ordered to follow her for her safety. He follows her from a distance, believing they're not at a stage in their relationship where they can talk to one another, but after Aoi falls into a trash can he has to go out and help her. He tells Aoi about his shyness which causes her to laugh and confide in him too. They end up bumping into a teacher called Shun Nakamura who stabs Yodaka in the neck with a tranquillizer. After concluding they're an enemy he goes to chop their neck, with an intensity that makes Nakamura believe his head is being cut off, however, Yodaka stops as Aoi turns to look at him. The man tries to run away, using Aoi's attention as cover, but Yodaka tells her he's going to the toilet which allows him to sneak up on the man. He tries to explain himself and bargain with Yodaka, but Yodaka rejects him, not caring about the money and is too shy to join a new group. He also declares how it's his job to protect the people. At the end of school, he tries to leave but Aoi comes up to him, asking to be his friend, making him very befuddled and says he needs to think about it first.
The next day, Number Nine scorns Yodaka for not saying yes to Aoi Mukai and they both understand how being friends with Yodaka may not be a pleasant experience. Aoi arrives and asks Yodaka to each lunch with her, which puts him in despair as his lunch is just dinner from yesterday. At lunch, Yodaka looks for a spot to eat and the pressure mounts on him. He mentions how he is afraid of disappointing people, so he keeps his distance. Number Nine chastises him for being conceited and reminds him that he's never been close enough with someone to let them down, so he should try making one first. Yodaka continues to find a spot and ends up knocking over the drink of some older students, who try to get money from him as compensation. Yodaka lets them walk all over him, but he lacks any money.
Aoi finds Yodaka and confronts the students which results in them knocking her lunch all over the floor, which angers Yodaka. He grabs his shoulder so tightly that it can't be budged, Number Nine reminds him not to fight civilians, but Yodaka says he has to do this for the sake of being her friend. The student goes to punch Yodaka, and he screams in fear as he dodges and sneakily trips him up and splits his trousers. This causes all the spectators to laugh at the student, and the group leaves out of embarrassment. Aoi checks on Yodaka and he apologizes for getting her lunch ruined, but Aoi tries to still eat it anyway. Yodaka realizes that he has nothing to be afraid of and tells Aoi he'd like to be her friend too, and she promptly accepts. Yodaka now wants to get to know Aoi, not for the mission's sake and they discuss eating her lunch.[2]
The next day, Yodaka is informed that Shun's allies also have undercover plants. Aoi meets him and had invited him to come along with her to karaoke with classmates. When walking there Yodaka has a hard time fitting in and conversing, but Hibari and Umineko help him out. All 3 of them notice a suspicious van passing by and at the karaoke place Umineko tells him to find the enemies, making an excuse for him to leave. He finds them being beaten up by Hibari outside the bathroom and helps her dispose of them. Once Aoi leaves the bathroom he asks her why she invited him, which she says is because she'd be lonely which clears up Yodaka's fear that she wanted him to struggle. He notices an enemy is still in the area and needed Umineko to distract Aoi so he could take care of him.[7]
Aoi gets Yodaka to join clubs for a trial period with her, but he's too afraid as clubs are being about relationships with other people. They end up meeting Miyake who is being mistreated in the soccer club, and Aoi challenges them to a soccer battle, which Yodaka is forced to tag along in. Yodaka and Miyake get bullied during the match, and Aoi gets aggressively tackled, which makes him decide to use his ninja skills. He's able to counter their attacks and helps score a goal by throwing some candy as Miyake approaches the ball, making it look like he headed it. The team celebrate their victory and Yodaka starts to like clubs.[8]
